in high school, before the academic year ended, i found out i lost one of my books. one cool friend classmate, however, was able to fully lend me hers, since they were on the honor roll naman, and they were finish already with their exams weeks before we – the rest of the class – take ours.

Over the course of my life, napansin ko people often interchangeably use the word dream and wish when they want to achieve something, when they want something to happen. The disctinction I see between the two (dream at wish) is that wish seems to have this sort of magical connotation, and I love anything magical.

How do you wish? Do you say it? Aloud? Quietly? Do you write it? Ilagay sa bote, at ibaon, itapon sa dagat? sa ilog? Do you  feel it to mean it?

I’m intrigued, because honestly I cannot give explicit instructions on how to wish. I feel that to wish shares this similarity with to love: to each his own. We might have some certain similarities, but my opinion on how a wish is a wish won’t ever be completely the same as yours. To each his own, I feel.

I know a person who makes a wish whenever she sees an airplane. There are some who do when they see a ‘shoot’ing star. Often a person makes a wish during her birthday, when it’s Christmas, when she’s alone, in a quiet environment, and the list goes on… perhaps infinitely. Just goes to show ‘to each his own.’

Now, why do we wish?

You might say you wish because you want something to happen, and that something – you are convinced – is impossible or very close to impossibility.

I can relate. See, I wish for people to stop comparing me with anyone else but myself. And I wonder why I wish that. or kung dapat ko ba ‘tong i-wish…

But I know that will never happen. There will always be people who will do the comparison between me and another person with completely different experiences compared to mine.

I ask, then:

• Do we have control as to whether or not our ‘wishes’ become true?

Why wish, if we have no control naman as to whether it comes true or not? Masabi lang na nagwish? Pagtas nun? Asa lang?

Why wish, if we have control naman pala on its realization? Anong use? Di ba pwedeng gawin na lang kung kaya naman pala?

Love is like playing the piano.

Tuwang tuwa ako nung una akong nakahawak ng totoong Piano. Para sa’kin kase the Piano is a very versatile instrument. Pwede siyang bumulong ng pagkahina-hina, pwede siyang sumigaw ng pagkalakas-lakas. Pwede siyang pang-romantic songs, pwede siyang pang-scary songs, and so on, and so forth.

Love is a topic I dared not tackle, ever since nagsulat ako dito sa blog na ‘to (correct me if I’m wrong), until today.

Learning to love is like learning the Piano: napakadaming notes, rests, at kung anu-ano pang symbols na kailangan mong matutunan para lang masabi mong “marunong” ka talaga mag-Piano. Kasama din siyempre dito ang iba’t ibang values tulad ng discipline, determination, at perseverance, among others. At hindi natatapos sa formal learning at pag-aaral ng Piano. It never ends, I say. You learn new things everyday. You learn new pieces, new styles, new techniques.

Sa aking palagay, ganito din ang pag-ibig. Napakalawak ng salitang ito. Iba iba ang kahulugan sa iba ibang tao. Other people can’t even define what love is. Napakadaming kailangang maranasan, matutunan, upang masabi mong tunay mong mahal ang isang tao. Napakadaming kino-consider upang mapatunayan mong mahal mo nga ang isang tao. Two, three years ago, iba ang definition mo ng “love” kesa sa definition mo nito ngayon. As we grow, natuto tayong “magmahal” ng totoo, ng tunay, ng wagas. I think natututunan ang pagmamahal, pero hindi ito napupwersa. Experience is always our best teacher, at love is not an exception. Experiencing love from our family teaches us (unknowingly perhaps) to love others. It hindi ito dito natatapos. Natuto tayo ng mga bagong concepts about love, bagong ways to show love, bagong “love” (love for surfing, love for pets, love for an activity).

Yes, we learn new rules, new concepts, new ways to show love, but as we go through the course of our life, we forget these concepts, rules, ways, etc., and we learn to love from our heart. Kung ano man ang sabihin ng puso, ito na ang nasusunod.

Mahal ko siya, kase girlfriend ko e. Mahal ko yan, kase asawa ko e. Mahal ko siya, dapat mahal ko siya, para sa mga anak blah blah blah. Mahal ko siya, so dapat susurprise ko siya sa anniversary. Mahal ko siya, kaya dapat maging ako ang dream/ideal man/woman niya.

Lahat ng sentences sa previous paragraph, X na. Hindi mo na maiisip. Mahal mo siya, kase mahal mo siya, period. True love is selfless unconditional love.

We were playing Volleyball yesterday when this rather persistent kid came into the scene. He would do his best to try and get the ball whenever it got away from our hands. He would do that each time the ball got out of our hands, after which we’d have a hard time getting the ball back. We told my classmate upon assuming the boy was his son to keep his son away.

After a few minutes and a very loud shout from behind me, we moved to a site far from people who were taking exams (it was actually Midterm Examinations week). Our problem was that the boy still followed, and he was still after the ball.

We were a bit lucky, though, because there was another group of students playing Volleyball, too, at the site where we were playing (actually hindi siya laro na big-time with court, small-time lang). This made the boy’s attention get diverted to them (the other group).

Pero that luck wasn’t for long. After a few more minutes, here came the persistent boy again. And he’s playing! With us!

His name is Xephyrus (and I hope I got the spelling correct, pero kung hindi man, at least you get the pronunciation). I got the information after asking him. His mother is a professor at school. OK, that might imply that he’s not a kid to be messed with. I claimed fathership of the boy (of course, I was just pretending).

So we let him play with us. Or I did. My classmates didn’t seem too happy about it, but I liked it. Each time the ball went away from us, he would fetch it. After getting the ball, he would make it bounce a few couple of times before finally hitting it. It went like that for maybe half an hour, or an hour, or more. This got my classmates bored. I enjoyed it. I kept cheering for Xephyrus (he’s beside me), telling him what to do. He would listen and give me the ball when I’d say it’s “my turn.”He would follow. I don’t know why, but he would follow what I’d say.

After eternity, my classmates finally had a plan to eliminate my son (lol) from the game. They executed their plan, and it worked. Temporarily. They played, Xephyruslessly.

After a few more minutes, he’s back! He was able to get the ball again, but this time, he gave it to me! So OK, I didn’t know what to do. I gave the ball back to my classmates, telling Xephyrus to play with them. He listened.

Again after a few minutes, there came to us people who were selling some form of food. I forgot what that was called, pero ang sarap, pramiz! I bought two, and told Xephyrus to come eat the other one (to stop him from playing (lol) ). He did so. He ate the food. When he was finished eating, he tried to get back to the game. I told him, however, not to, yet. His stomach might get outraged! (lol) He listened, again. I told him to sit beside me. He listened. And so we played, like a father plays with a son.

I was a fun experience, albeit a very tiring one!

So, that’s the easier part of being a father, I thought to myself: kulitan with kids. The harder part, however, is to guide them, as they grow up, to be good people.

And before I forget, it was my father’s birthday yesterday! Happy Birthday to my father!

Deathly Hallows - It all ends here.

Make no mistake, I watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1  November 21st of last year. I was with a very special person.

It was, however, a friend of mine at school name Angela Dalawis, who reminded me yesterday how much I know about the Harry Potter series.

Alright, the FREE elf who died was named Dobby.

Alright, Harry and Hermione went to Bathilda Bagshot’s house only to find Nagini possessing the body of the already dead woman. (or something like that)

Alright, the woman whose body was hovering in midair, while the Death Eaters and Voldemort discuss of Harry being transported to a safe place, in Malfoy Manor was Charity Babbage. And yes, she was a professor in Hogwarts, teaching Muggle Studies.

Alright, it was the Peverell brothers who were the lead cast in the Tale of the Three Brothers, and it was the youngest Ignotus Peverell who originally owned the Invisibility Cloak.

Alright, the complete name of the wizard we know as Dumbledore was Albus Percival Wulfric Dumbledore. He had a brother named Aberforth. and a sister.. Ariana I think.

Alright, the first spell cast in the movie version of the Deathly Hallows was of Hermione’s. It’s for memory modification/erasure, and it’s called “Obliviate.”

Alright, the thief who stole Salazar Slytherin’s Locket from #12 Grimmauld Place was named Mundungus Fletcher, and this thief was caught by the house-elf named Kreacher, helped by the loyal Dobby.

Alright, the “old hag from the Ministry” who took the locket from Mundungus was called Umbridge… Dolores Umbridge. She liked pink.

Alright, the ever mean witch who tortured Hermione was Bellatrix Lestrange, sister to Narcissa Malfoy, who was the wife of Lucius Malfoy, who was the father of Draco Malfoy.

Alright, alright. These I know, and a lot more. I’ve never realized until yesterday how much, from reading the seven books of the series, my memory has retained.

I think in life we gain knowledge in two ways: consciously, and subconsciously. There are a bunch of information, attitude, philosophy literally taught to us, but there are a number of the same things which we acquire without our full knowledge.
